Mark Rylance set to join Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One

Bridge of Spies

MARK Rylance looks set to join the cast of yet another Steven Spielberg project: his sci-fi film Ready Player One.

Just 24 hours after it was reported that the Bridge of Spies Oscar winner had signed up to play Pope Pius IX in The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, it now appears the actor and director will work together for a fourth time.

Ready Player One, an adaptation of Ernest Cline’s best-selling novel, will be set in a virtual world called OASIS, in which a teenager (played by Tye Sheridan) finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless foes after the game’s founder dies and offers his fortune as the grand prize.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rylance will play James Donovan Halliday, the creator of OASIS, described as a mix of Howard Hughes and Steve Jobs.

The only potential stumbling block to the reunion is Rylance’s schedule, as the in-demand thespian is also on board to co-star in another of Warner Bros’ upcoming releases, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk – although the former is due to commence filming in France on May 23, while Spielberg is not due to commence shooting until June.

In addition to working with Spielberg on the aforementioned films, Rylance will also be seen playing the titular role in the director’s upcoming film The BFG, which is expected to debut at Cannes next month.
