MARK Wahlberg is to play The Six Billion Dollar Man.

Based on the classic television series The Six Million Dollar Man and the novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin, the film will see Wahlberg playing military officer Steve Austin, who becomes part of a top secret government programme after a horrific accident leaves him near death.

Using cutting edge technology, Austin is brought back to life with extraordinary abilities, making him the world’s first bionic man.

The original TV series starred Lee Majors and ran for five seasons from 1974 to 1978. It was preceded by three TV movies. It also spawned a spin-off series, The Bionic Woman, which ran from 1976 to 1978.

Commenting on the update, Wahlberg said: “I’m thrilled to assemble The Six Billion Dollar for the big screen with the likes of Bob Weinstein and Damián Szifron. We look forward to creating a Steve Austin for the 21st century.”

Damián Szifron, who directed Wild Tales, has penned the screenplay and is going to direct the movie, with production due to start in September 2016 for a December 2017 release.

He commented: “Writing the screenplay was such a fantastic ride and embarking on this journey with Mark, Bob and Stephen to take this story to a whole new level is simply spectacular.

“Growing up, these kind of films left an indelible mark on me and now it feels so good to be making one.”
