MARVEL Studios and Disney have announced that the release date for its sequel to The Avengers will be May 1, 2015.

The news follows last week’s confirmation that Joss Whedon, who co-wrote and directed The Avengers, is returning to perform both duties on the sequel.

His first film, released in May this year, is now the third-highest-grossing film of all time world-wide ($1.46 billion) and in the US ($617 million).

After that, it’s Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, and Captain America: The Winder Soldier on April 4, 2014.

The recently announced Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which still is seeking a director, is headed into cinemas on August 1, 2014. All films will pave the way for The Avengers sequel.
