JOSS Whedon’s Marvel Avengers Assemble has scored the biggest opening ever for a superhero title in the UK with a whopping $24.7 million.

The UK performance was just one of a number of successes enjoyed by the film on a global basis, where it took a mighty $178.4 million ahead of its US release in May.

Disney and Marvel Studios took the decision to roll the film out in various markets ahead of America and the decision appears to have paid off handsomely with the film opening in No. 1 in all 39 of its launch territories.

It also posted the biggest opening weekend ever in key Latin American markets including Mexico ($15.9 million) and Brazil ($11.3 million) and grossed $19.7 million in Australia, the second highest opening ever.

In Asia, it posted the highest opening weekends in history in Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines, while in India it enjoyed the third highest opening for a Western film of all-time, according to Disney.

It has yet to release in America or two other key markets: Russia and Japan, where demand is expected to be high as well.
