MATT Reeves is to direct Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie, The Batman.

The filmmaker is highly regarded for his work on Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. He has just completed work on the three-quell to that film, War for the Planet of the Apes.

A statement issued by Affleck last week confirmed his decision to exit the director’s chair in a bid to concentrate on starring in the film. It reads “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.”

Two other names that were believed to be in contention for the gig were Ridley Scott, who has just completed Alien: Covenant, and Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez.

Affleck remains on board to both portray Bruce Wayne/Batman and co-write the script with DC Films co-head Geoff Johns. However, according to sources referenced by The Hollywood Reporter, that script could be set to undergo a significant overhaul.

Joe Manganiello is also in The Batman as the villain Deathstroke, also known as Slade Wilson.
