Matt Smith set to play Charles Manson in new film

Matt Smith as Doctor Who

Story by Jack Foley

FORMER Doctor Who and current Prince Philip actor Matt Smith is to play cult leader Charles Manson in a new film.

The British actor, who plays the Duke of Edinburgh in Netflix hit The Crown, will portray Manson in Charlie Says.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film – directed by American Psycho filmmaker Mary Harron – will focus on three young women who were found guilty of murder.

Manson directed his followers to commit a string of brutal murders in 1969. He died last November.

The convicted followers were initially sentenced to death alongside Manson for the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders. But the death penalty was later lifted in California and they were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Filming is due to start in Los Angeles in the spring, with fellow Brit Suki Waterhouse, Game of Thrones‘ Hannah Murray and Nurse Jackie actress Merritt Wever also among the cast.

Ironically, Manson is the subject of a second high-profile new film currently in production: a new project by Quentin Tarantino, which will be set against the backdrop of the Manson Murders in 1969, in what is being described as a Pulp Fiction-style tale. Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly agreed to star among Tarantino’s ensemble.
