Matthew McConaughey to star in Gus Van Sant's Sea of Trees
Story by Jack Foley
MATTHEW McConaughey is to star in Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Trees alongside Ken Watanabe.
Based on a script by Chris Sparling, the film will focus on an American man (to be played by McConaughey) and a Japanese man (Watanabe) who meet in Japan’s infamous ‘Suicide Forest’, where people go to commit suicide.
Instead of killing themselves, however, the duo embark on a reflective journey through the forest together.
The casting news marks McConaughey’s first since he started to garner Oscar buzz for his performace in Dallas Buyers Club – a role for which he has also won the Golden Globe and Screen Actors’ Guild Award.
It also underlines his commitment to choosing more challenging, less mainstream roles – although he has recently completed shooting Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar (which is at the high brow end of the blockbuster scale).
McConaughey can also be seen in scene stealing form in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street and has HBO drama True Detective headed to UK screens on Sky Atlantic very soon. The show is garnering outstanding reviews in the States.
