Meatballs holds off Fame and Bruce Willis to top US
Story by Jack Foley
ANIMATED comedy Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs has topped the US box office for a second successive week in spite of the triple challenge posed by new releases Fame, Surrogates and Pandorum.
The Sony movie took a further $24.6 million to lift its 10-day total to an impressive $60 million.
In a distant second place, meanwhile, was Surrogates, the Bruce Willis sci-fi actioner, which amassed $15 million in spite of an $80 million budget.
And Kevin Tancharoen’s Fame followed in third with $10 million to post opening figures that were at the low end of expectations.
Of the few box office successes at the weekend, Matt Damon’s The Informant! slipped to fourth with only a “respectable” 34% decline in ticket sales. Its 10-day total now stands at $21 million, based largely on strong reviews and word of mouth.
And Michael Moore’s new documentary Capitalism: A Love Story opened impressively by achieving the top per screen average this year with $60,000.
