MEN In Black 3 has topped the US box office with an estimated $70 million over the four-day Memorial Weekend.

The Will Smith three-quel looks to have fallen just short of Sony’s pre-weekend estimates of $75-80 million but is projected to gross a solid $202 million globally overall by the end of the weekend.

It also means that it has toppled The Avengers from the US box office summit.

The film’s international performance is expected to hit $132 million from 104 territories, although the film did open ‘soft’ in several several European countries, including the UK, due to the warm weather keeping people outside.

And it still has its work cut out to break even or finish ahead of the $230 million it is reported to have cost to produce… not including its marketing spend.

But Sony is pleased with its performance thus far, pointing out that the film’s opening figure in the US is better than the first two films in the franchise for its opening three days.

Elsewhere, The Avengers continued to remain a formidable force after a month on release, taking a further estimated $37 million for the three days so far in the weekend.

According to Disney, the film’s global gross is now $1.3 billion, just shy of the $1.33 billion earned by the final Harry Potter film, which is currently the third biggest title of all time.

However, it also became the fastest film to cross $500 in the US, after just 23 days.

Another new release, the horror film Chernobyl Diaries, placed only fifth with an estimated $8 million for the three days so far.
