Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts to play mother and daughter

Julia Roberts in Duplicity

Story by Jack Foley

MERYL Streep and Julia Roberts are to play mother and daughter in an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play, August: Osage County.

To be directed by John Wells for the Weinstein Co, the film will follow the women of a family whose lives have become separated until a crisis bring them back to their childhood home in the company of the dysfunctional woman who raised them.

Streep will play the pill-popping matriarch, while Roberts has been cast as her daughter.

As part of a statement released by the Weinstein Co confirming the project, Roberts is quoted as saying that she leapt at the chance of starring alongside Streep.

The quote is: “After seeing Meryl Streep’s mesmerizing portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, it has me even more excited and proud to co-star with her.”

Shooting is due to commence in the autumn under the direction of Wells, whose last film was the Tommy Lee Jones-Ben Affleck ensamble Company Men.
