Michael Haneke's Amour leads European Film Award nominees

Amour

Story by Jack Foley

MICHAEL Haneke’s Palme d’Or-winning Amour (Love) leads the nominations at this year’s European Film Awards with six nods.

The film is up for best film and best director while its stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva are up for best actor and best actress. Haneke is also up for best screenplay while Darius Khondji is among the nominees for his cinematography.

The film, which was among the best reviewed films of the recent London Film Festival, faces competition from the likes of French hit Untouchable and British sex addiction drama Shame.

The latter film, directed by Steve McQueen, is nominated for five prizes, including a nod for its star Michael Fassbender.

Other multiple nominees include Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt, which is also nominated in five categories, with Mads Mikkelsen up for best actor for his role as a man falsely accused of child abuse.

The performance won the Danish star the best actor prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

British spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy received four nominations, including a best actor citation for Gary Oldman.

While Kate Winslet is nominated for best actress for her role in Roman Polanski’s Carnage.

Bernardo Bertolucci, veteran director of Last Tango in Paris, will receive a lifetime achievement prize at the awards ceremony, and British actress Dame Helen Mirren will also receive an honorary award for her achievement in world cinema.

The awards ceremony will be held in Valletta, Malta, on December 1, 2012.
