MICHAEL Jackson’s This Is It took an estimated $101 million over its debut weekend at the worldwide box office and topped the US box office.

The documentary, which takes a look behind the scenes at what would have been the late singer’s final tour, took an estimated $21.3 million in America over the Halloween weekend.

Distributor Sony Pictures had initially forecast a US figure of close to $30 million, but the global figures represent a major success for the company, proving the world-wide reach of Jackson’s music and celebrity.

Elsewhere at the US box office, low-budget horror sensation Paranormal Activity continued to perform strongly, dipping only 22% to take a further $16.5 million in its sixth week of release.

The film being dubbed “the new Blair Witch Project has now taken an estimated $84.8 million based on word of mouth and good reviews. It landed in second spot at the box office.

But another horror outing, Saw VI, continued to perform badly, slipping to No. 5 in its second week with an estimated $5.6 million.

Fox Searchlight’s Oscar hopeful Amelia, starring Hilary Swank, made No. 8 in its second week after failing to make the top 10 in its debut the previous weekend.
