Michelle Monaghan and Peter Dinklage join Adam Sandler's Pixels

The Heartbreak Kid

Story by Jack Foley

MICHELLE Monaghan and Peter Dinklage have joined the cast of new Adam Sandler adventure Pixels.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film – which is being viewed as a summer 2015 blockbuster – is based on an Internet short from 2010.

It chronicles what happens when aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them and begin a war on the human race, using the games as models for their various assaults.

The US president (to be played by Kevin James) is therefore forced to turn to his childhood best friend to lead a team of old-school arcaders to save the planet.

Sandler has been cast as a former champion, while Josh Gad is a conspiracy-theory-obsessed genius with really bad social skills.

Monaghan will play a weapons developer for the military as well as Sandler’s love interest, while Game of Thrones luminary Dinklage will be Sandler’s brash former video game-playing nemesis.

Commenting on the production, Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad told The Hollywood Reporter: “Pixels is the perfect showcase for Adam Sandler’s brand of all-audience comedy. Adam and Chris have created a story that will deliver truly unique action, comedy and special effects and bringing back beloved arcade-game characters in a delightfully original manner.”

Chris Columbus is directing.

Monaghan is hot again off the back of her acclaimed performance alongside Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in HBO’s True Detective. She is also due to co-star in Better Living Through Chemistry with Sam Rockwell and is currently shooting the adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks’ novel The Best of Me with James Marsden.
