Minions: The Rise of Gru

UNIVERSAL is delaying the early July release of animated family adventure Minions: The Rise of Gru from Illumination Entertainment.

The announcement follows the distributor’s decision to push back Fast & Furious 9 by a year in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Minions: The Rise of Gru had been set to open in North America on July 3, after beginning its international rollout in late June.

But Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri said in a statement: “In response to the severity of the situation in France, we are temporarily closing our Illumination Mac Guff studio in Paris.

“With this decision we are abiding by the French government’s guidelines and doing everything possible to slow the spread of the virus as we care for our artists and their families. This means we will be unable to finish Missions: The Rise of Gru in time for our planned global releases in late June and early July.

“While we all grapple with the enormity of this crisis, we must put the safety and protection of our employees above all. We look forward to finding a new release date for the return of Gru and the Minions.”

Minions is the latest in an ever growing line of blockbuster releases scheduled for 2020 to be pushed back due to the coronavirus global pandemic. Most have moved by around six months, such as James Bond title No Time To Die.

But others, such as A Quiet Place: Part II and Black Widow, have yet to be given new release dates until the coronavirus situation becomes clearer.
