MTV Movie and TV Awards 2019: Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones lead nominees

Avengers: Endgame

Story by Jack Foley

MARVEL’S Avengers: Endgame and HBO’s Game of Thrones lead the nominations for this year’s MTV Movie and TV Awards (2019).

Both productions have landed four nominations apiece, along with the documentary RBG.

As it did last year, MTV has eliminated gender from the acting categories and has bridged a divide between performances on film, television and streaming. The nominations also strive to include all content, regardless of genre.

Hence, Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), Sandra Bullock (Bird Box) and Lupita Nyong’o Us) are pitted against Oscar winner Rami Malek Bohemian Rhapsody in the best performance in a movie category, which includes the Netflix film Bird Box.

And Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) are up against Jason Mitchell (The Chi) and Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) in the best performance in a show.

In the best hero category, Marvel luminaries Iron Man and Captain Marvel are pitted against each other (as played by Robert Downey Jr and Brie Larson, respectively), while MTV Awards host Zachary Levi also features among the nominees for his performance in rival DC superhero flick Shazam!.

Three new categories are also introduced this year — reality royalty, most meme-able moment and best real-life hero.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards will air on Monday, June 17 at 9 pm from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.
