Story by Jack Foley

BRIDESMAIDS and The Hungers Games lead the nominees for this year’s MTV Movie Awards (2012) with eight nominations each.

The two films will go head-to-head in a couple of big categories, vying for Best Movie of the Year as well as best female performance for either Jennifer Lawrence or Kristen Wiig.

The two leading ladies are pitted against British actress Emma Watson for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Rooney Mara for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Emma Stone for Crazy, Stupid, Love.

In the male category, The Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson is up against Daniel Radcliffe (for Harry Potter) as well as Ryan Gosling for Drive, Joseph Gordon-Levitt for 50/50 and Channing Tatum for The Vow.

Liam Hemsworth, meanwhile, is in the running for best breakthrough performance for his role in The Hunger Games along with Bridesmaid‘s Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo‘s Rooney Mara.

Elle Fanning (Super 8) and Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) complete the breakthrough category.

The other contenders for movie of the year, meanwhile, are Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, The Help and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.

The MTV Movie Awards take place at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, Los Angeles, on Sunday, June 3, 2012, and will be broadcast live on MTV.

In a first for the ceremony, the nominees were chosen by a panel of actors, producers, agents and industry insiders this year, whereas in the past they were previously selected by the public.
