My Super Ex-Girlfriend - Preview

My Super Ex-Girlfriend

Preview by Jack Foley

COULD 2006 be the year of the anti-romantic comedy? The Vince Vaughn-Jennifer Aniston starrer The Break-Up appears to have set a template that Ivan Reitman’s My Super Ex-Girlfriend could well be following.

The comedy follows the fortunes of Luke Wilson’s architect, Matt, who breaks up with his ‘frumpy’ girlfriend, Jenny (Uma Thurman) only to discover that she’s a spiteful superheroine.

The ensuing film finds Matt having to suffer all manner of embarrassments and revenge-themed plots in order to properly get away from her and looks to be a return to form for Reitman, whose past comedy ventures include Stripes, Ghostbusters and Old School. If the trailer is anything to go by, it could well be a fun romp.

Talking about the film to Entertainment Weekly recently, Reitman was full of praise for his cast whose selection raised a few eyebrows early on. Luke Wilson, brother of Owen, has made more of a name for himself as a talented ensemble player in films like The Royal Tenenbaums and Old School, while Kill Bill star Thurman isn’t always an automatic choice for comedic parts.

Yet the director believes in his ability to extract a little bit of the unexpected out of his stars.

‘’Luke Wilson is every man,’’ he says of the actor, ‘’a likable guy that you want to hang out with.’’

As for Thurman: ‘’I just had a sense about her,’’ says Reitman, who hadn’t seen The Producers when he cast her. ‘’Much in the same way that I was confident I could make Arnold Schwarzenegger funny in Twins or Robert Redford in Legal Eagles.’’

The film does boast two more comedians among its cast, in the form of Eddie Izzard and Anna (Scary Movie) Faris, as well as Rainn Wilson, of US TV show The Office, who had to film his scenes in between reporting for duty on the NBC TV show.
