NAOMI Watts is set to play the late Princess Diana in a new biopic.

According to trade publication Variety, the Australian actress beat rivals including The Help‘s Jessica Chastain to the role.

The film, called Caught in Flight, is being directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel and will reportedly follow “the last two years of the Princess’ life”.

It will also chart “how finding true personal happiness for the first time allowed her to evolve into a major international campaigner and humanitarian”.

The film is set to begin shooting in the UK later this year.

Watts said of her role: “It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role – Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on-screen.”

Hirschbiegel, who has previously won widespread acclaim for directing Hitler movie The Downfall, added: “I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.”

Watts film credits include the remakes of King Kong, The Ring and Funny Games as well as 21 Grams, for which she received an Oscar nomination. She was most recently seen alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in J Edgar.
