New Ghostbusters casts Melissa McCarthy among female leads

The Heat

Story by Jack Foley

MELISSA McCarthy is among the leads for the female-led reboot of Ghostbusters.

The casting will see her reunite with Bridesmaids co-star Kristen Wiig as well as Bridesmaids director Paul Feig.

Feig himself announced the casting news on Wednesday (January 29, 2015) via his Twitter account, when he also said that Saturday Night Live comediennes Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon would also make up the new Ghostbusters team.

The film will be released on July 22, 2016.

The casting announcement means that an all-new, completely rebooted Ghostbusters will now be in cinemas as opposed to an extension of the previous venture, which starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson.

That film was first released in 1984 and made almost $300m (£198m) at the global box office. A sequel, Ghostbusters II, followed five years later and rumours of a third instalment have persisted ever since.

However, the death of Harold Ramis last year seemed to set things back, while original director Ivan Reitman also ruled himself out of the picture last March.

News of the new cast has been trending on Twitter ever since being announced with opinion apparently split between those who feel the casting is great news, and those who feel that the project is now dead before it’s even begun.
