Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off in the works as Star Wars universe expands

A STAR Wars spin-off centred around the character of Obi-Wan Kenobi is in the works.

Stephen Daldry, the Oscar-nominated director behind Billy Elliot and The Hours, is in early talks to direct the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

As yet, there is not even a script and the project is very much in the earliest stages of development.

But if a deal is secured, Daldry would oversee the film’s development and writing.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi stand-alone would be the newest in a series of projects being developed by Lucasfilm and Disney that fall outside the trilogies telling the saga of the Skywalker family.

A Han Solo stand-alone is now in the final stages of shooting under new director Ron Howard, while there are apparently other plans to develop films centred around the legendary characters of Yoda and the bounty hunter Boba Fett.

A prequel to the first Star Wars, in the form of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, was a critical and commercial success, underlining the strength of the Star Wars brand.

Kenobi has already been played on film by two actors. In George Lucas’ 1977 original, he was first seen as a desert-dwelling, war-weary hermit who later proves to be a wise and powerful warrior, brandishing a lightsaber.

He briefly becomes a mentor to a young Luke Skywalker before being cut down by Darth Vader, his former pupil. Alec Guinness’ portrayal of Kenobi garnered him an Oscar nomination.

Ewan McGregor then stepped into the shoes vacated by Guinness to portray a younger Kenobi in the critically-unflavoured prequels, which chronicled the origin of Darth Vader and his betrayal of Kenobi and the Jedis.

McGregor has previously said he would be open to playing the character again, although sources stress that no actor is attached given how early the film is in the development process.

In addition to his work on Billy Elliot and The Hours, Daldry most recently directed episodes of Netflix’s period drama The Crown, which also garnered him an Emmy nomination.
