Olivia Wilde to make directing debut with Booksmart

Cowboys and Aliens

Story by Jack Foley

OLIVIA Wilde is to make directorial debut with Booksmart.

The film, which has cast Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein in the main roles, follows the pair as two academic superstars and best friends who, on the eve of their high school graduation, suddenly realise that they should have worked less and played more.

Determined never to fall short of their peers, the girls set out on a mission to cram four years of fun into one night.

Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins penned the initial script, which has been revised by Susanna Fogel and Katie Silberman during the course of its development.

Wilde has long been looking to make her directorial debut and was drawn to the feminist nature of the material.

Her film credits include Meadowland, which she also produced, Cowboys & Aliens and Rush.

She also executive produced a slew of short documentaries, including Oscar-nominated Body Team 12. On the directing side, she has helmed music videos for Red Hot Chili Peppers and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

She will next be seen in A Vigilante, which is premiering at SXSW, and Dan Fogelman’s Life Itself.

Dever can be seen next in Lynn Shelton’s Outside In and Beautiful Boy. She also has credits for writing and performing an original song in Jason Reitman’s upcoming film Tully.

Feldstein had her breakout role in the comedy Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and followed that up as Saoirse Ronan’s friend in the award-winning Lady Bird.
