Ouija and John Wick boost US box office coffers with strong debuts

Story by Jack Foley

HORROR movie Ouija and Keanu Reeves action movie John Wick have both performed better than expected at the US box office in their first weekends.

Ouija topped the weekend with $20 million to mark another victory for Blumhouse Pictures, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and Universal following the similarly mini size budgets of the Purge franchise.

The film follows a group of friends who uncover the dark powers of a Ouija board while trying to summon their recently deceased friend’s spirit.

John Wick, meanwhile, placed second with $14.2 million, marking a win for leading man Reeves following the box office disappointment of his previous blockbuster, 47 Ronin.

John Wick finds Reeves playing an ex-hitman who comes out of retirement to hunt down the gangsters who have taken everything from him. It also stars Michael Nyqvist, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo and Willem Dafoe.

Lionsgate’s David Spitz was over the moon with the performance of the film, which had only been tracking in $7-8 million range. He said: “We’re ecstatic over the results. Keanu has such an amazing body of work, and John Wick will be added to that list.”

Brad Pitt World War II tank drama Fury slipped from first to third but held well in its second weekend, taking $13 million and pushing its US total to $46.1 million. It also took in a solid $11.2 million internationally, include the UK where it opened at No.1.

David Fincher’s Gone Girl placed fourth in its fourth weekend, grossing $11.1 million for a US total of $124.1 million, and animated film The Book of Life rounded out the top five with $9.8 million.
