Pain and Glory to open Film4 Summer Screen 2019 as full line-up confirmed

Pain and Glory

Story by Jack Foley

PEDRO Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory will kick off this year’s Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House in London (2019).

The film, starring Antonio Banderas, tells of a series of re-encounters experienced by Salvador Mallo (Banderas), a film director in his physical decline… some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity; his first desire; his first adult love in the Madrid of the 80s; the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense and writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable; his early discovery of cinema; and the void, the infinite void that creates the incapacity for him to keep on making films.

The Summer Screen line-up then concludes with Inna de Yard, a documentary about the recording of an acoustic album of reggae classics that delves into Jamaica’s rich cultural history.

In between, there’s classic films such as Marvel’s Black Panther to sci-fi classic The Matrix, as well as fantasy adventure The Princess Bride and Quentin Tarantino classic Reservoir Dogs.

Of the double bills on offer, there’s the chance to see Nicolas Cage classics Mandy (one of his most recent works) and Wild At Heart, while for the romantics, there’s the chance to be reunited with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise and Before Sunset.

Tickets are £20.75, £26.75 for double bills (with the exception of Before Sunrise + Before Sunset, which is considered a single) and £26.75 for premieres. Head to the Somerset House website to book from Wednesday, May 22.

One major addition to this year’s Summer Screen is the inclusion of a beanbag or director’s chair for hire, for an extra £7.50 (a blanket makes it £10), for anyone who forgets to bring some form of comfortable seating.

The festival takes place from August 8 to 21.
