Paris Je'taime - Preview

Paris je T'aime

Preview by Jack Foley

FILMGOERS with a passion for Paris might like to check out forthcoming film Paris Je t’aime (which translates as “Paris, I Love You”), a love letter to the French capital that will be making its way into UK cinemas in June.

The film is a collection of 18 short films about finding love in one of the world’s most romantic cities, featuring a top-drawer line-up of stars and directors.

Appearing in front of the cameras are the likes of Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhall and Gerard Depardieu, while the directors include Walter Salles, Wes Craven and the Coen Brothers.

The concept is the brainchild of producer Emmanuel Benbihy who gave each director a strict set of rules. Hence, each segment runs for roughly five minutes and each takes place in a different area of Paris.

The film played at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and drew a mixed response among critics who were divided over whether the film represented a missed opportunity from directors of such high calibre.

Needless to say, the Coens delivered one of the uniformly praised segments, reuniting with Fargo star Steve Buscemi. But efforts from Gus Van Sant didn’t go down quite so well.

Another segment Parc Monceau, directed by Alfonso (Children of Men) Cuarón was shot in a single continuous shot.

Audiences will be able to judge the merits of the film for themselves when the film opens in limited cinemas on June 22.
