Peter Mayhew returning as Chewbacca in Star Wars: Episode VII

Story by Jack Foley

PETER Mayhew is returning to the Star Wars universe for Episode VII.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Mayhew will reprise his iconic role as legendary Wookiee Chewbacca for Disney and Lucasfilm’s upcoming sequel.

Chewbacca is best known as Han Solo’s co-pilot in the original trilogy, commencing with Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in 1977.

The casting has yet to be officially confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm but The Hollywood Reporter is confident that the news is true. It also lends fuel to the suspicions that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will be reprising their roles.

Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed as much when he previously said: “There will be some very familiar faces along with a trio of new young leads.”

The Mayhew casting news comes just days after Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn revealed that shooting has already begun on the movie, and that most of the cast was now locked down.

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams and is due to hit cinemas on December 18, 2015.
