PETER Sarsgaard is in final negotiations to play the villain in the forthcoming remake of classic Western, The Magnificent Seven.

The actor will saddle up against an all-star cast that includes Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke, as well as Vincent D’Onofrio, Haley Bennett, Jason Momoa and Luke Grimes.

Antoine Fuqua, of Training Day/The Equalizer fame is directing.

The Magnificent Seven is a remake of the classic 1960 film of the same name, which starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson (among many others). It was, in itself, a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai.

The story follows seven gunslingers who are hired to protect an oppressed Mexican village from a group of outlaws.

In the new version, Sarsgaard will play the robber baron who runs the outlaws who have overtaken the town.

The script was most recently reworked by John Lee Hancock after True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote the previous draft.

Sarsgaard will shortly be seen in Ed Zwick’s chess drama Pawn Sacrifice and The Experimenter. He is also part of the Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass alongside Johnny Depp.
