Philip Seymour Hoffman joins Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire
Story by Jack Foley
OSCAR winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has officially joined The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire.
The actor – most recently seen on Broadway in the Tony nominated Death of a Salesman alongside Andrew Garfield and Fran Kranz – will play the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, head gamemaker for the Hunger Games.
News of Hoffman’s possible involvement first emerged in June, when it has now emerged that he received an official offer for the role after circling for several weeks.
In the first film, Wes Bentley assumed the role of head gamemaker.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire follows Katniss Everdeen (again played by Jennifer Lawrence) as she returns home after winning the 74th annual Hunger Games along with Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and senses a rebellion is forthcoming.
In the meantime, however, the Capitol remains very much in control and President Snow (Donald Sutherland) continues to prepare for the 75th annual Games (known as the Quarter Quell).
Francis Lawrence will direct Catching Fire with shooting due to begin in September with a view to a November 22, 2013 release.
Hoffman will next be seen on the big screen in The Master and A Late Quartet.
In other recent Catching Fire news, Jena Malone has been offered the key role of Johanna Mason.
