Quantum of Solace - New 007 name explained

Quantum of Solace press conference

Story by Jack Foley

IT’S left fans baffled to say the least, but their is method behind the madness of naming the 22nd James Bond film Quantum of Solace.

Speaking at a press conference at Pinewood Studios in the UK, the film’s star and returning 007 Daniel Craig explained to journalists: “Ian Fleming had written about relationships. When they go wrong, when there’s nothing left, when the spark has gone, when the fire’s gone out, there’s no quantum of solace.

“And at the end of the last movie, Bond has the love of his life taken away from him and he never got that quantum of solace.”

As widely predicted, the plot of the new Bond film will pick up in the aftermath of the events of Casino Royale, when James Bond was left double-crossed and broken hearted by the love of his life, Vesper Lynd (played by Eva Green).

Craig confirmed that Quantum of Solace would find his character going out “to find the guy who’s responsible”.

“He’s looking for revenge, you know, to make himself happy with the world again. But the title also alludes to something else in the film,” he added, to increase the intrigue.

While the film’s name may be odd, it seems that the new 007 remains one of the most keenly anticipated movies of the year.

Marc Forster, the director of Finding Neverland and The Kite Runner makes his debut behind the camera, while Paul Haggis once again assumes script duties.

Craig’s Bond will also be joined by new cast members Gemma Arterton, as an MI6 agent, Olga Kurylenko, as his love interest, and French actor Mathieu Amalric, who plays the villainous Dominic Greene.

Although Kurylenko has yet to shoot any scenes, she told reporters that she was busy training in the use of weapons as well as body flight training for aerial scenes and stunt work for fights.

But her co-star Arterton has shot some sequences, including a kiss that she confessed had made her feel “giddy”.

Dame Judi Dench, who returns for her sixth outing as M, also revealed that she had more to do this time and hinted that her relationship with Bond would be “pretty prickly”.

Quantum of Solace will be released in UK cinemas on November 7, 2008. Check out photos from the 007 press conference
