Quantum of Solace receives UK royal world premiere

Quantum of Solace, UK premiere

Story by Jack Foley

PRINCES William and Harry were cheered by hundreds of film fans as they arrived for the Royal world premiere of 22nd James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, on a cold, wintery Wednesday night in London’s Leicester Square (October 29, 2008).

The royal brothers also met 200 invited servicemen, veterans and their families at the red carpet, with proceeds from the lavish bash going to two charities of the Princes’ choice – Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion.

007 himself, Daniel Craig, also proved a popular draw among fans and happily signed autographs and posed for photos despite still having his arm in a sling.

He also declared his pleasure at the fact the film had received its world premiere in London – as Bond is “as British as it could be”. He also said that he could never get over the “incredible” reception that fans gave him.

Leicester Square was transformed into a Bond spectacular for the occasion, with giant screens and speakers belting out Bond themes old and new, Bond’s Aston Martin on show in the square and clips from the film also being beamed for patient films fans to see.

Among the other Quantum of Solace stars who attended were 007 stalwart Dame Judi Dench, who plays Bond’s boss M. She said she still enjoyed being part of the franchise, but hoped that future films might see the return of other regular characters such as Miss Moneypenny and gadgets man, Q.

She said she hoped the next Bond film would see the return of regular characters Q and Miss Moneypenny.

New Bond girls Olga Kurylenko and Gemma Arterton also dazzled fans with their fashion – the former arriving on the red carpet in a dramatic red dress and the latter producing many gasps for her revealing purple dress.

White Stripes music supremo Jack White, who wrote and co-performed the latest Bond song, Another Way To Die, was also among the stars who attended the event, along with new Bond villain, French actor Mathieu Amalric.

Long-time Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson also spoke to journalists about the importance of keeping Bond contemporary and pushing the franchise forward, while new director Marc Forster (of Finding Neverland and The Kite Runner fame) revealed the immense pressure he felt upon accepting the chance to direct the project.

Picking up 20 minutes after the events of the far superior Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace finds James Bond jetting off on a global mission that’s part fuelled by his desire to gain revenge for the murder of Vesper Lynd.
