Rami Malek to play Freddie Mercury in Bryan Singer biopic

Mr Robot

Story by Jack Foley

MR Robot‘s Rami Malek is to play legendary Queen singer Freddie Mercury in new biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

X-Men luminary Bryan Singer will direct the long-gestating project.

Singer confirmed the news of Malek’s casting via his Instagram account with a photo of the group.

Anthony McCarten, who penned the Oscar-winning The Theory of Everything, is to write the screenplay.

The Freddie Mercury biopic has been a long-held dream project for producer Graham King, who had originally set it up at Sony Pictures with Sacha Baron Cohen set to star.

But creative differences over the direction of the film saw Cohen eventually drop out, prompting King to look elsewhere for a new director and frontman.

Malek, 35, is a hot property for his role in Mr Robot. He won the best actor Emmy earlier this year for his performance in the show.

He was also recently cast in the forthcoming remake of the 1973 drama Papillon alongside Charlie Hunnam.
