Razzies 2008: Murphy and Lohan dominate

Eddie Murphy in Norbit

Story by Jack Foley

EDDIE Murphy and Lindsay Lohan dominated the annual Golden Raspberry Film Awards (or Razzies), each winning three unwanted trophies for their performances in 2007.

Murphy – who was Oscar nominated last year for Dreamgirls – claimed three of the four worst acting categories for his comedy Norbit, while Lohan won two worst actress Razzies for I Know Who Killed Me, a thriller that saw her playing two characters – a small-town girl abducted by a psychopath and an alter-ego stripper who’s missing body parts.

The same film broke Razzie records by winning eight of its nine nominations, including worst film and another for Lohan for worst screen couple (for a scene in which she appears opposite herself).

I Know Who Killed Me was a critical and box office disaster for Lohan, taking only $9m (£4.5m) worldwide and heading straight to DVD in the UK.

Norbit, meanwhile, confounded critical maulings to “enjoy” relative box office success with takings of $158m (£94m) worldwide.

But even though it made its star a little richer, many insiders claimed after its release that the film may have cost Murphy his Oscar (for best supporting actor).

The only other film to get a look-in at the awards was Daddy Day Camp (ironically, a sequel to another Murphy vehicle that didn’t feature the star himself), which took the worst prequel or sequel prize.

The Razzies are announced annually on the eve of the Academy Awards, by means of a pre-Oscars spoof. Past recipients have included John Travolta, Sylvester Stallone and Halle Berry, who broke the mould on her year by attending the ceremony to collect her prizes.

The Razzies take the form of gold spray-painted trophies worth $4.89 (£2.48).
