Razzies 2008: Murphy and Lohan lead nominations

Eddie Murphy in Norbit

Story by Jack Foley

EDDIE Murphy and Lindsay Lohan lead this year’s Razzie nominations, the honours given to the worst Hollywood films of the year.

Lohan’s thriller I Know Who Killed Me has attracted an unwanted nine nominations, one ahead of Murphy’s Norbit, which is up for eight.

The LA-based honours – also known as The Golden Raspberry Awards – have also given Murphy five personal nods, the most an individual has received in any one year.

The actor plays three characters in the film, which follows the misfortunes of a man who meets his ideal woman while engaged to someone else (who just happens to be hideously obese).

It marks quite a turnaround in Murphy’s fortunes, given that he recevied a best supporting actor Oscar nomination last year for Dreamgirls – an award that many had predicted he would win.

But Razzies founder John Wilson spared him no blushes, stating: “We decided that each of his characters was so offensive that he deserved individual nominations.”

Lohan, meanwhile, is said to have received more votes than any other actor since Sofia Coppola’s performance in The Godfather Part III for her performance in I Know Who Killed Me, a thriller that saw her playing two characters – a small-town girl abducted by a psychopath and an alter-ego stripper who’s missing body parts.

Mr Wilson added: “I Know Who Killed Me is the most fabulously brainless movie since Showgirls, which Razzie voters picked as the worst movie of the 1990s.”

Another film to attract eight nominations was the Adam Sandler/Kevin James comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry.

It’s in the running for worst screen couple, screenplay, director, supporting actor (x2), supporting actress, actor and picture.

And Bratz, a live-action film based on the childrens’ dolls, and Daddy Day Camp, which found Cuba Gooding Jr starring in the sequel to Murphy’s Daddy Day Care, also attracted five nominations each.

Adam Sandler and Cuba Gooding Gooding are both up for worst actor along with Nicolas Cage for Ghost Rider and Jim Carrey for The Number 23.

The four stars of Bratz, meanwhile, shared a nomination for worst actress along with Jessica Alba for three films – Awake, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Good Luck Chuck.

The Razzie nominations are announced a day before the Oscar nominations and the awards are handed out on February 23 – 24 hours before the Oscars. They are not expected to be affected by the ongoing writers’ strike.
