Revolutionary Road gets lavish UK premiere
Story by Jack Foley
KATE Winslet attended the European premiere of her latest film, Revolutionary Road, in London on Sunday night (January 18, 2009), just one week after picking up a Golden Globe for her performance in the Bafta-nominated drama.
She was joined by her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio on the red carpet, and posed for photos and signed autographs for fans on a cold night.
Revolutionary Road finds the former Titanic stars playing Frank and April Wheeler, two former free spirits, who marry, set up home in rural America, start a family and then find the dream turning sour.
As life fails to deliver on the dreams and idealism of youth, the two find themselves arguing, bed-hopping and becoming increasingly disillusioned… until they decide to throw caution to the breeze and embark on a misbegotten plan to cure their malaise by moving to Paris.
The film is based on the 1961 celebrated novel by Richard Yates and is directed by Winslet’s husband, Sam Mendes.
Speaking on the red carpet, DiCaprio said he would love the opportunity to play alongside Winslet for a third time, as they had been searching for a new project in the 12 years since they filmed Titanic.
Winslet, meanwhile, looked stunning in a revealing black Narciso Rodriguez dress, and quickly laughed off questions about her Golden Globes acceptance speech, which many have since deemed “embarrassing”.
She described the moment as overwhelming and said she had not expected to win one award – let alone two.
