Rian Johnson to direct Star Wars: Episode VIII
Story by Jack Foley
RIAN Johnson is to direct Star Wars: Episode VIII.
The Looper filmmaker – who is also best known for directing two of the most critically-acclaimed episodes of Breaking Bad – will also write a treatment for the third film in the new trilogy – although he won’t direct.
As yet, little more is known about the direction the second film in the franchise will take, especially as very few plot details exist for the first entry in the continuing space saga.
J.J. Abrams is directingStar Wars: Episode VII, which is currently shooting.
It stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o and Max von Sydow, who will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.
Johnson has directed three feature films. His directorial debut, Brick, won the Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.
He followed that up with 2008’s The Brothers Bloom and 2012’s time-jumping sci-fi action-drama Looper, starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
