Ricky Gervais making David Brent movie
Story by Jack Foley
RICKY Gervais is to make a film based upon the continuing adventures of David Brent, his character from The Office.
Life On The Road will chart Brent’s progress in the 15 years since leaving the company at the centre of the hit BBC-2 show. Shooting is due to commence next year (2015).
It will be made in the UK with a view to achieving world-wide distribution, particularly as The Office was shown in more than 100 countries and provoked an equally popular US remake starring Steve Carell.
The plot of the film will reportedly find Brent (played by Gervais) as a travelling salesman attempting to finance a UK concert tour in the hopes of fulfilling his dreams of becoming a rock star. Filmed in the same mockumentary style as The Office, it will see Brent assuming that the director is making a rockumentary in the vein of Martin Scorsese’s film about the Rolling Stones, only to discover that it’s a “where are they now”? piece.
In TV guise, the success of The Office – which was deemed groundbreaking at the time, saw Gervais pick up a slew of awards for his portrayal of Brent, enabling him to go on to produce and star in the hit shows Extras and Derek, as well as pursue a career in Hollywood in films such as Night At The Museum and The Invention of Lying.
But he returned to his best known character, Brent, for a Comic Relief special in 2013 and, more recently, revived the hapless character in a series of spoof videos on YouTube that invited viewers to learn the guitar with the former manager of Slough paper company Wernham Hogg.
It was the success of this campaign that persuaded Gervais that a movie could be a reality.
