Ridley Scott hints at Alien: Awakening as Covenant follow-up
Story by Jack Foley
RIDLEY Scott has hinted that Alien: Awakening could be the name of the next movie in his continuing Alien franchise.
In an interview with Fandango, the veteran director slipped the name into a chronological list of the ‘Alien’ prequel movies.
He said: “There will be another one before we kind of literally and logically, clockwise, back into the rear back head of [the original] Alien. It will go Prometheus, Awakening, Covenant … fairly integral where this colonization ship is on the way.”
Whether or not he got the order wrong remains to be seen. For, it correct, it would mean that Awakening would come after Prometheus and before Covenant, which has yet to be released in cinemas. It would therefore be a sequel and a prequel.
As for Alien: Covenant, Scott debuted 15 minutes of footage at the SXSW festival in the US, which reportedly had genre fans salivating [and screaming].
Declaring to audiences that his “mantra has always been to scare the living sh-t out of you”, the director then presented several scenes, including how the new creatures reveal themselves by erupting from the mouths of their host bodies in fountains of blood.
Commenting on how Alien: Covenant will differ from its predecessors, Scott has also said that it will be both ‘gorier and smarter’.
“We raise some very interesting questions about the position and possibility of AI against human condition, and it crosses into the zone of apartheid — kind of like how Roy Batty was treated like a second-class citizen [in Blade Runner],” he said.
