Rob Marshall to direct Pirates of the Caribeean 4?
Story by Jack Foley
ROB Marshall looks set to direct the fourth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.
The movie, which is subject to approval by Disney, would put the film on track for a 2010 production start, although Variety reports that the studio has begun casting new characters already such is its confidence in the deal.
The fourth Pirates film has been anchored in dock since original franchise director Gore Verbinski jumped ship in April to focus on a movie version of the videogame Bioshock for Universal.
That film has since lost momentum, but Verbinski is keen to pursue new challenges and is attached to other directing and producing projects.
But Marshall, who hits include the Oscar-winning musical Chicago, is poised to board the franchise, which is among the most lucrative in Disney’s illustrious history. The original trilogy grossed $2.6 billion worldwide.
Marshall most recently completed another musical, Nine, with stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson and Sophia Loren. The film will be released in the US and UK on November 25.
