Robert Downey Jr joins Spider-Man: Homecoming

Captain America: Civil War

Story by Jack Foley

ROBERT Downey Jr has reportedly closed a deal to join the cast of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The news has fuelled speculation that Iron Man and Spider-Man will become key friends as the Marvel universe expands.

Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Homecoming, made his debut as the character in Captain America: Civil War, which lays the foundations for the key relationship.

It also suggests that Downey Jr isn’t quite ready to quit the Marvel universe yet as his Tony Stark character is also likely to feature in future Avengers instalments as well – although it remains doubtful whether there will be another stand-alone Iron Man feature.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be the first Spider-Man title to fall under the Marvel banner.

Production is due to begin in June with Jon Watts directing.

Marisa Tomei will play Aunt May and also appears in Civil War, while Zendaya is one of the female leads.

Tony Revolori, who starred opposite Ralph Fiennes in The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Laura Harrier, who appeared in the soap opera One Life to Live, are also boarding the production, which is being produced by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal.

Spider-Man: Homecoming currently has a UK release date of July 28, 2017.
