Robert Pattinson to play T.E. Lawrence

Remember Me

Story by Jack Foley

ROBERT Pattinson has signed up to play T.E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia, in Werner Herzog’s new film Queen of the Desert.

The film is a biopic of Gertrude Bell and stars Naomi Watts in the lead role.

Bell was described as the ‘female Lawrence of Arabia’ because of the impact she had in the Middle East and her work in establishing what would become the modern framework for Jordan and Iraq.

British-born, she was an explorer, writer, archeologist and political attache and worked for British Intelligence during World War I.

Pattinson will play Lawrence, the archeologist-turned-British Army officer who also played key roles in Middle Eastern revolutions at the same time. He also became close friends with Bell.

The last person to play him on-screen was Peter O’Toole, who was Oscar nominated.

The move continues Pattinson’s intent on staying away from the mainstream and building a career for himself as a serious actor post-Twilight.

Having recently worked with David Cronenberg on Cosmopolis, he is also set to star with Guy Pearce in the postapocalyptic The Rover as well as the indie thriller Mission: Blacklist, about the capture of Saddam Hussein.

Shooting on Queen of the Desert is due to take place on location in Jordan and England this autumn.
