Robin Hood to open Cannes Film Festival

Robin Hood

Story by Jack Foley

RIDLEY Scott’s epic re-telling of Robin Hood is to open the 63rd Cannes Film Festival.

The keenly anticipated blockbuster, starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett, is to be screened on Wednesday May 12, 2010, and will be presented out of competition.

Based on a screenplay by Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential, Mystic River), the film will portray the birth of the Robin Hood legend and also stars Mark Strong, Max Von Sydow, Lea Seydoux and William Hurt.

Its Cannes debut will mark Scott’s third time at the festival – his first film, The Duellists, was in the Official selection at the Festival de Cannes and a prize winner in 1977, while Thelma and Louise was presented out of competition in 1991.

Robin Hood will be released in French cinemas the day of its presentation at Cannes and then world-wide from May 14.

In donning the green attire of the British legend, Crowe will be following in the footsteps of Errol Flynn, Sean Connery and Kevin Costner.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival takes place from Wednesday, May 12 to Sunday, May 23, 2010.
