Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Arrival lead Empire Awards nominees

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Story by Jack Foley

SCI-FI hits Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Arrival lead the nominations for the 2017 Empire Awards.

Gareth Edwards’ blockbuster spin-off leads overall with nine nods, including best film, best actress (Felicity Jones), best male newcomer (Riz Ahmed), best sci-fi/fantasy film and best director (Gareth Edwards).

But Denis Villeneuve’s stunning Arrival is also in the running for best film, while its leading lady Amy Adams – unbelievably [and cruelly] snubbed by this year’s Oscars – is up for best actress.

Other actresses vying for that trophy are Natalie Portman for Jackie, Ruth Negga for Loving and Emma Stone for La La Land.

Up for best actor are Ryan Gosling for La La Land, Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool, Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea, Eddie Redmayne for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Benedict Cumberbatch for Doctor Strange.

The winners, voted for by the public, will be announced at a ceremony in London next month.
