ROONEY Mara is in talks to play the title role of Mary Magdalene in Garth Davis’ new biopic.

According to Variety, the Oscar-nominated actress has been actively pursued by See-Saw Films and Universal Pictures International.

Davis himself commented: “Rooney’s raw, brave approach to performances, coupled with her deeply magnetic inner life, holds all the dimensions needed to bring to life one of history’s most misunderstood woman – Mary Magdalene. Having worked with Rooney on Lion, I know she is a once in a life-time talent.”

Mary Magdalene is being described as “an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history”.

It is based on a script by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett.

Production is due to being in the summer for an anticipated release in 2017.

See-Saw’s Iain Canning and Emile Sherman will serve as producers. Their credits include The King’s Speech.

Mara recently picked up an Oscar nomination for her role in period lesbian drama Carol and is also set to star in the upcoming Untitled Terrence Malick Film.

She will also appear in Davis’ Lion at the end of the year.
