INDIE stalwarts Ryan Fleck (pictured) and Anna Boden have been signed up to direct Captain Marvel.

The duo landed the high-profile gig after an extensive search, which is said to have included the likes of Sam Taylor-Johnson, Jennifer Kent (of The Babadook) and Kung Fu Panda‘s Jennifer Yuh.

Fleck and Boden have long been renowned on the indie circuit, having shot to prominence with the drug drama Half Nelson, which subsequently earned Ryan Gosling his first Oscar nomination back in 2006.

They have since directed movies such as Sugar, It’s Kind of a Funny Story and the gambling drama Mississippi Grind, which paired Ryan Reynolds with Ben Mendelsohn to such winning effect.

On TV, they have also helmed notable episodes of top-rated shows The Affair and Billions.

Ironically, Boden and Fleck would appear to be following in the footsteps of The Russo brothers, who directed the last two acclaimed Captain America films and will helm the next Avengers instalment, Infinity War. They were also filmmakers that did a lot of television work, helping them to get noticed by Marvel.

Brie Larson will take the lead in the film, which boasts a script co-written by Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Nicole Perlman and Inside Out‘s Meg LeFauve.

At the moment, Captain Marvel has a release date of March 8, 2019.
