Ryan Gosling in Blue Valentine

Story by Jack Foley

JEFF Lemire’s graphic novel The Underwater Welder is to be adapted for a film by Ryan Gosling.

The actor will also produce the project with Ken Kao and Anonymous Content.

The New York Times best-selling graphic novel follows the fortunes of a man in the dangerous profession of underwater welding, who has a supernatural encounter at the bottom of the sea.

The graphic novel was first released in 2012.

The main character, Jack Joseph (who could also be played by Gosling), is an offshore oil rig worker responsible for scuba-diving and repairing the rig. On shore, his wife is pregnant with their unborn son, adding to Jack’s pressures.

However, during one dive, Jack encounters a supernatural presence at the bottom of the sea that puts him in contact with the ghost of his own father.

The ensuing story explores themes dealing with the relationship between fathers and sons as well as memory and reality.
