Ryan Reynolds is The Green Lantern

Ryan Reynolds in Definitely Maybe

Story by Jack Foley

RYAN Reynolds has won the race to play DC Comics hero The Green Lantern.

The coveted role had been touted as a possible star vehicle for the likes of The Hangover star Bradley Cooper, as well as Justin Timberlake and Jared Leto.

But Variety reports that Reynolds has triumphed, with production on the Martin Campbell directed feature due to begin in January.

The news caps a memorable summer for Reynolds, who played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, prompting Twentieth Century Fox to begin development on a spin-off film, and who enjoyed another box office No.1 alongside Sandra Bullock in The Proposal, which crossed the $100 million mark this week.

Reynolds is also confirmed to star in indie thriller Buried for Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes, in which he will play a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to co-ordinate a rescue even though he doesn’t know where he’s buried in the desert.

The script for The Green Lantern has been co-written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green.
