Sacha Baron Cohen set to play Mandrake the Magician

Alice Through The Looking Glass

Story by Jack Foley

SACHA Baron Cohen is set to play Mandrake the Magician, the popular comic-strip character.

According to The Tracking Board, the actor-comedian will play the lead role in the film, which is still under the early stages of development under the direction of Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen.

Mandrake The Magician made his debut in 1934, having been created by The Phantom‘s Lee Falk. His super-skill is based on his ability to quickly hypnotise people and he used the powers against gangsters, ne’er-do-wells and mysterious creatures from other dimensions.

Mandrake was syndicated across a number of US newspapers and was a sizeable success before being put into retirement in 2013.

Cohen’s casting marks the actor’s latest foray away from the type of comedy he became known for with roles such as Borat and Bruno. His most recent self-penned comedy, the action-based Grimsby, bombed at the box office, taking just $3.2m in its opening weekend.

He can currently be seen on-screen in another box office misfire, Alice Through The Looking Glass.
