SAM Claflin is to play Finnick Odair in Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games.

The British actor is hitherto best known for roles in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Snow White & The Huntsman but has also stood out in British TV dramas such as White Heat and Any Human Heart.

His character, Finnick, is described in Suzanne Collins’ novels as “charismatic” and “clever”. He also won the Hunger Games when he was 14, having been picked from District 4.

Claflin joins new castmembers Jena Malone as Johanna Mason and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee.

The official synopsis for Catching Fire has now been released and reads as follows: “Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson).

“Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a ‘Victor’s Tour’ of the districts. Along the way, Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow (Donald Sutherland) prepares the 75th annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.”

Francis Lawrence is directing the film, which is currently scheduled for release in US cinemas on November 22, 2013.

Claflin recently wrapped on The Quiet Ones opposite Jared Harris and Mary & Martha with two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank.
