Sam Riley to play Ivanhoe
Story by Jack Foley
SAM Riley is to play the title role of Ivanhoe in Iain Softley’s epic adaptation of Sir Walter Scott’s classic story.
Based on a script by John Brownlow, the film promises action and romance and is being developed by the Berlin-based Egoli Tossell Film together with Spain’s Morena Films.
In book form, Ivanhoe tells the story of one of the remaining Saxon noble families at a time when the English nobility was overwhelmingly Norman.
It follows the Saxon protagonist, Wilfred of Ivanhoe, who is out of favour with his father for his allegiance to the Norman king, Richard I of England, and is set in 1194, after the failure of the Third Crusade, when many of the Crusaders were still returning to Europe.
Riley has recently completed work on the fantasy thriller Byzantium with Neil Jordan.
