Sam Worthington and Charlize Theron for The Tourist
Story by Jack Foley
IN-demand Australian actor Sam Worthington has replaced Tom Cruise in new thriller The Tourist.
The film, a remake of French thriller Anthony Zimmer, also stars Charlize Theron.
The original followed a female Interpol agent (to be played by Theron) as she attempts to catch a wanted criminal by dangling an everyman American tourist as bait. The criminal in question also happens to be her former lover.
The screenplay for the update has been co-written by Julian Fellowes, Bill Wheeler and Chris McQuarrie for Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) to direct.
Cruise had been considering the project with Theron for a year, but eventually left for an as-yet untitled new project with director James (Walk The Line) Mangold, thereby paving the way for Worthington to swoop in.
Aside from his big breakthrough in Terminator Salvation, Worthington has landed the lead roles in two more incoming blockbusters, James Cameron’s Avatar and next year’s Clash of the Titans remake.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, he has also just landed the lead in a remake of Danish thriller The Candidate.
