San Andreas sequel in the works

San Andreas

Story by Jack Foley

DWAYNE Johnson is reportedly preparing a sequel to his disaster flick San Andreas.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is working with New Line to develop a follow-up to the earthquake hit, which grossed over $473 million worldwide last year.

Johnson himself intends to reprise his role as the search-and-rescue helicopter pilot who, in the first film, up with his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) to save their daughter (Alexandra Daddario) when a series of quakes crush Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Gugino, Daddario and Paul Giamatti, who played a seismologist, are also expected to return, as is director Brad Peyton.

And while plot details remain sketchy, the scope of the movie is expected to expand to include the infamous Ring of Fire, which circles the Pacific Ocean with fault lines and volcanoes. According to scientists, this section of the world is home to about 90% of the world’s earthquakes.

The only question is: will audiences like being rocked in such similar fashion again, as San Andreas paled by comparison to the best disaster flicks such as The Day After Tomorrow.
